I am not talking about when we were kids and you forgot to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. Nor am I referring to those days you wake up from a great dream only to find out it was a dream. No, what I am talking about is a great travel quote I just came across. ‘Travel isn’t just about checking destinations off a bucket list. It’s about those “pinch me, is this even real?” moments.’
I just love this quote! It is so true! Traveling the world, checking new destinations off your bucket list is amazing. I highly recommend it! New experiences to the far reaches of the earth is something everyone should do. But what about those WOW moments? Do you feel like someone should pinch you when you travel? No? Why not?
Sometimes, I think we look at things without really ‘seeing’ them. Yes, I am looking at that flower. Great! But are you really noticing the brilliant colors or the intoxicating scent? What an interesting rock formation over there. That? Did you know it is called ‘The Monk’ and has a fascinating back-story? I have been to Mayan ruins many times, no big deal. Really? You’re taking in the beauty of Machu Picchu and you think it fits in the ‘seen one, seen them all’ category? What does it take to give you goose bumps?
One of my most memorable WOW or ‘pinch me’ moments was swimming with sting rays while on a cruise visit to Turks and Caicos. They are so soft and silky! It was amazing! Another was sitting on my hotel room balcony in Costa Rica watching the rain clouds engulf the Irazu Volcano and thinking that the intensely green mountain looked almost fake. Nothing can be that green! Well, except Ireland….and it is!
Ireland is a pinch me, it can’t be real country. I flew over from London across Ireland to Kerry airport. The entire countryside was immaculately manicured with stone walls boarding profoundly green fields. From the plane it looked like a magnificent picture! And the day we took a drive around the Dingle Peninsula on the Slea Head Drive, I got chills! I thought I was in heaven! That was truly a memorable ‘pinch me’ moment!
The aqua blue, turquoise waters of the Caribbean intoxicate me every time I go. How can that be real? Water is water, right? I can only imagine what Bora Bora really looks like! Cute thatched roof huts over crystal blue water so clear you can see each grain of sand on the ocean floor. Pinch me already!
The amazement we experience when traveling is related to more than just natural wonders. Intricate cities built on mountainsides in kaleidoscope colors. Cruise ships of gigantic proportions with lots of distractions. Smaller vessels with exclusively intimate, private space. Romantic, secluded beach hideaways designed to indulge all your senses. Man made marvels like the Pyramids or Stonehenge. The possibilities are endless…
The world is an unbelievably intriguing place full of wonderful and amazing sights! Traveling the globe will take you to many enchanting destinations. When you arrive, open your eyes, mind and senses to what you are experiencing. Let the camera in your mind absorb your surroundings and commit the wondrous beauty to memory.
